New Nuclear Plants Fact Sheet 2009

Posted by Carrington Dillon On November - 12 - 2009

fl3constructionClean Energy Insight has created a Fact Sheet for 2009 focused on New Nuclear Plants and their benefits.  I’ve attached the Fact Sheet for you to use in any way that you would like.  Attach it to a pro-nuclear letter you are sending your Congressman, or just send it to a colleague or friend.

Thank you for this very well put together fact sheet. It is clear, easy to read and will make a good email attachment to educate the public at large.

  2. Adam says:

    A great, concise fact sheet.

I do have a couple comments:
“Dispersions from coal combustion result in effective radiation dose 100 times greater than nuclear energy production.” - This wording seems really awkward. Something like “Coal power plants emit…” would sound much better.

“The granite walls of the Capitol Building in Washington D.C. emit so much radiation from contained uranium traces (65 times more than nuclear plants are allowed) that it could never be licensed as a Nuclear Power Reactor Site. If it were a Nuclear Power Plant, it would be decommissioned.” - You could probably make this point without quoting the dubious, global-warming-denying junkscience.com, which is currently slandering the CEOs of Duke Energy and Exelon for supporting legislation aimed at addressing climate change.

  3. DocForesight says:

Comment: Is the order of land-use comparison for wind and solar switched (i.e. solar indicated first but the amount of land used written second or vice versa)?

@ Adam: “…without quoting the dubious, global-warming-denying junkscience.com…” I think it is fair to say that there are many credible scientists who are questioning the validity of the man-made global warming “settled science” and “debate” being over. Fact is, there has never been a debate - just the UN IPCC (which is not a scientific organization, but a political one) with their “projections” and “predictions” based on climate models that all missed the past 10 years of cooling, despite the increasing CO2 emissions.

Would you care to comment about Steve McIntyre’s unveiling of Mann’s and Briffa’s reports? If the UK Met Office can’t or won’t produce their data, how can you have any confidence in their proclamations? How about commenting on Dr. Lindzen’s latest report on CO2 and warming? How about commenting on the effect of water vapor and clouds and the negative forcings on global temperatures? See http://www.drroyspencer.com

The pro-AGW propaganda machine has had free reign since 1988 but now the evidence is becoming thread-bare as more and more credible scientists dispute the “findings” and Nature isn’t cooperating.

Bottom line: (1) mankind has for generations thought that it could affect climate (King Kanute) but has always proved incapable; (2) Nuclear power can stand on its own as the Colossus of energy generation without the need to employ or participate in scare tactics that will do nothing to affect global climate trends.

  4. DGM says:

Excellent fact sheet. If every American knew these facts, the debate would be over.

  5. Paul says:

Great fact sheet! We need to educate every American about these facts. The nuclear industry suffers not from poor technology or poor safety but from inadequate education of the public. It is a natural response for people to be afraid of things they do not understand. We, as an industry, have been working off the principle that the best technology will win the debate. What have we got? A country that is scared to embrace nuclear power, TMI is synonymous with massive radiation exposure and death, Build projects halted, a country that is willing to scorch the landscape to build wind and solar in the name of saving the environment, and the list continues. It is time to make our voices heard with general advertisements on websites, youtube, Hulu, TV, magazines, billboards, etc. These are tactics that our competitors have embraced and what have they got? Green (to use the eco-friendly buzz word) is now synonymous with Solar, wind, and even Natural Gas! Billions of dollars are being pushed for funding (a whole lot different than loan guarantees) to these projects, and the most important thing, the general public embraces these technologies and are calling for action build them as fast as possible. A call to action for nuclear to get its name known is needed, and this is the stepping stone. My new buzz-word campaign for nuclear; “Re-think Nuclear”
